MSE welcomes and congratulates our Summer MILL fellows. The fellowship program would not be possible without the support of Patricia and Arthur R. “Art” Cox, CHE ’61, MS MET ’63. Patricia’s donations in her late husband’s honor not only speak to the value Art saw in MSE but in the MILL and the opportunities it presents for students and scholarship. We also want to thank our donor Mueller Water Products, Inc. their contributions which keep programs like this possible. This Summer we are joined by Mary, Stici, Gab, and Tamara. We wanted to give these outstanding fellows an opportunity to introduce themselves to you and share their work with you so that you can see what is going on this summer at the MILL.

Mary demonstrating the Leica Optical Microscope and SEM during STEM Gems tour

Mary: Hi! My name is Mary and I am a rising 3rd year MSE student.  I joined the characterization team at the MILL in January.  Being a summer MILL fellow has allowed me to become proficient in using the characterization equipment, especially the SEM and x-ray instruments.  This summer I have also been able to work on some personal projects using the 3d printers and making stickers on the cricut.  During the rest of the summer, I hope to also learn how to use the laser cutter and embroidery machine.  Outside of the MILL, I love to travel and hangout with friends!  Some of my hobbies include swimming, baking, and making stained glass art.

Stici at 2024 MILL Fashion Show

Stici n the MILL, using textiles equipment

Stici: Hi! I’m Stici, a rising 3rd year in Industrial Design. I joined the MILL at the beginning of my second year to be part of the Processing Team. Since then, I’ve joined the Textiles Learning and Discovery team, participated in the MILL Fashion Show, and become a Technical Officer for the 3D printers. Being a Summer Fellow has given me a lot of hands-on experience with fixing 3D printers, learning to use new equipment, and getting to know about the world of MSE. In my time outside of the MILL, you can likely find me in the Industrial Design studio working on my projects. My goal for this summer is to have our High Temp 3D printer fully operational for the school year and share my experience and knowledge with incoming MILL staff!

Gab: Hey! I’m Gab and I’m a rising 3rd year MSE major. I began staffing the MILL in Fall 2023 on the processing team, and am the current Button Maker and Vinyl Cutter Technical Officer. I’ve spent my time as a MILL Fellow learning how to use the mechanical testers, laser cutter, and setting up the new multi-filament 3d printers. In and out of the MILL, you can usually find me working on a new arts and crafts project. This summer, I hope to have the Bambu multi-filament 3d printers and Glowforge Laser Cutter fully open for use.

Tamara: Howdy! I’m Tamara and I am a rising 4th year MSE major. I’ve been staffing in the measurement team since my second semester at Tech (5 semesters!) and have been the Technical Officer for the Mechanical Testers for most of that time. Being a MILL fellow has allowed me the time to familiarize myself with more of the instruments we have available in the MILL that I hadn’t had time to learn previously. In my free time, I fence and figure skate, as well as playing social deduction and board games with my friends. I hope to continue learning to use the equipment present in the MILL to help others and work on my own personal projects!
